FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- Two mothers have been charged with felony child neglect after a child was found wandering without any clothes in a WaWa store parking lot, say Spotsylvania County authorities.
A two-year-old girl was found in the parking lot of the store in the 10700 block of Courthouse Road on Sunday. When a trooper arrived, a store employee had already brought her inside the store and given her clothes. The child was then able to point toward her home on Courthouse Road.
The deputy took the child to the home and knocked on the door. According to authorities, the deputy knocked for several minutes before someone answered. When the deputy went inside, she smelled rotten food and animal waste, authorities say. Rotten food was found around the kitchen and animal waste was found in several areas of the house, according to officials.
Only two adults were at the home: 29-year-old Crystal Dawn Craig and 38-year-old Amy Elizabeth Lam. Seven other children were found at the home. They ranged from 7 months to 16 years old.
Due to the conditions found at the home and the children's conditions, Crimes Against Children and Child Protective Services workers visited the home. All 8 children were taken into protective custody and then given to their grandmothers.
Authorities say three of the children were Craig's while five children belonged to Lam. Craig is charged with 5 counts of felony child neglect. Lam is charged with 3 counts of child neglect. Both mothers are being held in jail without bond.
According to sheriff's authorities, animal control also took custody of seven dogs and two kittens and charged Lam with failure to maintain her premises in a sanitary condition and duties of an owner to provide food and water.
