COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA) -- Thursday at approximately 3:05 a.m., Howard County police say a teenager was driving a car southbound on Columbia Road in the area of Tarkington Place when he lost control of the car, which then left the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver, 17-year-old Shaquan Jamal Curtis of Columbia, died from his injuries he received in the single-car crash.

Curtis had three others in the car with him. Twenty-one-year-old Obafami Oyeniyi Ilupeju, 20-year-old Tres Quante Jones and 20-year-old Dontrell Milner were taken by Ambulance and Medivac to the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition.

Howard County Police say the investigation is still in its early stages but that it seems the primary cause of the crash was excessive speed. They are also investigating the possibility that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
